A Wiki for Unix

31st December 2015

A few days back I sat down and did an OCR job on Dennis Ritchie's draft of the Unix Time-sharing System from 1971. It got me to thinking, there isn't a single document that look at the design decisions in early Unix, what inspired them and what has lasted over time. I was going to write a paper on it, but then I realised that it was probably beyond me.

13th December 2015

I'm making my final exit from the OzTiVo community by relinquishing ownership and control of www.oztivo.net. The community has been in existence for about 15 years now, and we have seen a huge change in the video devices available to consumers and the delivery models for video.

12th December 2015

I've just moved my web site, minnie.tuhs.org, to a 64-bit virtual machine with 2G of virtual RAM and 48G of SSD disk space. To me this is quite amazing because, when I first set minnie up, she ran on a 10MHz 8088 XT clone with 640K of RAM and a 30M RLL disk drive.

23rd December 2015

I've spent the last few weeks tidying minnie up and bringing her up to date. Today I finally got around to updating the top level pages on the web site. That means that the web spiders might find this blog, and thus you might be the first person to actually read this stuff. Congratulations! Sorry that I've disabled comments, but feel free to e-mail them to me.

24th December 2015

I've been collecting and archiving my e-mail now for nearly 30 years. That's not strictly true: I've been backing up lots of files and junk now for a long time, and a part of this are the e-mail's I've sent and received.

A few months back I found out that Norman Wilson had been sitting on a bunch of documents that had PDP-7 Unix source code. Argh! I knew that Dennis Ritchie had these documents, but I'd assumed that they had been lost of disposed of when dmr passed away. But Norman had made photocopies of them.

Bringing PDP-7 Unix Back to Life, part 2

Wow! I'm really impressed with the speed at which the PDP-7 Unix restoration team has got things up and going. My user-mode simulator is going well. Phil Budne has taken over the care of the assembler and he's also written a shell. I've written tools to make, populate and check the filesystem.

Why did I start up the Unix Heritage Society? I think the seed was placed way back in 1982 when I spent two weeks at a summer school for high-school students at the

One of my past students, Henry, noted that I needed more colours to draw things on the whiteboard. That got me thinking if something like a Raspberry Pi could be used as a cheap smart whiteboard, along with a projector. It turns out that Johnny Lee has already done this using a
