Silicon Graphics Computer Systems GL2

Release Date: May, 1986
Released By: Silicon Graphics Computer Systems
Source Code: 3.6 archived on Bitsavers
History:

SGI GL2 is an early derivative of System V "Release 0" released on the IRIS 1000 through 3000 terminals and workstations (The different editions are prefixed with T for terminal or W for workstation).

It utilized the MEX Graphical User Interface, an early, non-X11 and non-NeWS GL-accelerated interface.

It was eventually replaced by 4D1 after the acquisition of MIPS Computer Systems by SGI, and 4D1 combined elements of both MIPS Computer Systems umips aka risc/os UNIX and GL2. This coincided with the transition from the Motorola 68000 to the MIPS R-series CPUs.
