Phototypesetter C was a version of the C compiler for Unix. According to Clem Cole: “Phototypesetter C pre-dates 7th Edition Unix and was needed to compile the new version of troff. Basically if you licensed troff, you got a new compiler to compile it. Phototypesetter C was then included as the 7th Edition compiler. I believe it was the version that Dennis and Brian used for the K&R.” (private e-mail to Warren Toomey, June 2000)
