====== Univel/Novell UnixWare/SCO UnixWare ====== **First Release Date:** 1992\\ **Final Release Date:** 2018 \\ **Released By:** Novell, later SCO, now Xinuos\\ **Source Code: ** Never officially released, leaks exist\\ **History: ** UnixWare was a product of the Unix Systems Laboratories section of AT&T, as they were releasing the USL System V release 4.2. It uses the VERITAS VxFS as of release 2. Novell quickly purchased both USL and Univel in 1993. UnixWare 1.1 was released in 1994 with full TCP/IP support in all editions (Unixware 1.0 only had IPX in personal edition). Novell sold UnixWare in 1995 to the Santa Cruz Operation, aka SCO, where they planned unification of their customer base around a unified UnixWare and OpenServer set of versions. This was accomplished with UnixWare 7, which jumped from version 2 to 7 to reflect OpenServer's numbering. It was based on System V Release 5, which was only ever utilized by SCO and successor companies. SCO sold its entire UNIX division to Caldera systems, renaming itself "Tarantella" and Caldera becoming the "SCO Group" Unixware 7 continued to receive updates sporadically until SCO Group went bankrupt in 2012, with the business acquired by Xinuos, which officially retains rights to it and claims support. ---- **Works Cited** - [[https://www.scl.org/1006-the-sco-open-source-litigation-saga-the-community-fights-back/]] - [[https://www.osnews.com/story/141690/unixware-in-2025-still-actively-developed-and-maintained/]]
